Amsterdam Buddhist festival celebrates a legend

Colorful production an autumn tradition

AMSTERDAM — People from as far away as Los Angeles and China gathered Thursday at the Goddess of Mercy Temple to begin a traditional celebration that would lead to gazing at the moon.

The temple, the former church of St. Michael the Archangel, was bathed in color both from decorations and from costumes worn by members of the Buddhist World Peace and Health Organization who, like millions of others around the world, consider the Mid Autumn Festival a celebration of great importance.

A table was filled with moon cakes, apples, bananas, candy and chips for the celebration that would follow a two-hour production that included a re-enactment, singing, dancing and kung fu demonstrations.

The festival, which dates back centuries, is rooted in the tragic legend of Houyi the Archer, said Jennie Wong, the organization’s spokeswoman, who recounted the tale in English and then in Chinese.

Houyi noticed the rivers were running dry and the land suffered from drought — likely the consequence of having 10 suns in the sky.

He shot down nine of them with his bow and arrow, the legend says, and became admired as a hero for relieving people’s suffering.

Later, Houyi married Chang’e, a woman considered “beautiful and virtuous” whose company he wouldn’t enjoy for much longer. The legend says Houyi went to visit a holy mountain where he met with a goddess. He asked her for a sample of the “elixir of life” and she gave it to him.

But the goddess told Houyi if he took it, he’d immediately become immortal and ascend into the heavens.

Unwilling to leave his wife Chang’e, Houyi instead gave the elixir to her to hide, but an evil apprentice saw it. That evil apprentice, Feng Meng, found an opportunity to get Chang’e alone and demanded the elixir at knifepoint.

With few options, Chang’e took the elixir herself and began floating toward heaven, choosing to land on the moon so she could stay as close to earth as possible.

Unable to seek retribution since Feng Meng ran away, Houyi instead set up an altar and put all his wife’s favorite pastries and fruits on it, starting a tradition that spread.

After recounting the legend, dozens at the temple Thursday did their part; some sang, others danced.

Lucas Wang, known by his Buddhist followers as Ziguang Shang Shi, offered a blessing at the end of the ceremony and wished all in attendance happiness and joy.

The group shared moon cakes and prepared for a celebration that would include basking under the light of the moon Thursday night.

Miracles I Witnessed

By Roger S.

When I was in the Western Shrine, I’ve witnessed first-hand, a couple of people who have had cancer become healed and their tumors mysteriously disappear without any surgical operation, radiation, or chemotherapy. I’ve seen people who appear so sick and about to die soon, bounce back and become rejuvenated and energetic once again.

I’ve witnessed a lady who had a severe case of hemorrhoids and couldn’t walk. She was bed-ridden. Holy Master Ziguang Shang Shi gave her some Holy Water to wash herself and a few hours later, she sprang out of nowhere, dancing and singing a song in front of a large audience as if nothing ever happened. I don’t think that could ever happen at a hospital if a patient walked in asked a doctor to cure her hemorrhoids in two hours.

I’ve also witnessed many people emerge from depression and exuberantly happy. The individuals arrive at the Western Shrine appearing very dark, insecure with low energy levels, and leave the Shrine feeling and looking very happy, bright, energized, confident, and wiser.

Personally, I’ve had a long-time shoulder injury from playing tennis with the addition of heel spurs on my feet from playing sports with the wrong type of shoes. It was all permanently cured after staying at the Western Shrine for one week, with no surgical operation or injections. I even tried to purposely throw it again when playing tennis, but my shoulder is like brand new and perfectly fine.

I used to wake up every morning with bad allergies causing me to sneeze relentlessly for a few hours each day, but since I started my meditation practices these morning allergies have been completely eliminated.

Insights and Awakening

By Roger S.

Holy Master Ziguang Shang Shi has taught me some valuable lessons:

From reading the Diamond Sutra, I’ve begun to notice how the ego really distorts our way of thinking.  I now see every day how so many people are negatively affected by only thinking about their wants, their ego, their self-importance, their reputation, etc.  Since late last year, I’ve been trying my best to apply this and let go of my own ego as much as possible.  What I’ve discovered is that I was normally a very happy person in general, but now I’m even happier and more satisfied with all aspects around me whether it’s good or bad.  When I talk to my co-workers, friends, and family, it seems to always apply.  When people are upset or unhappy, it seems they are unhappy that they are not able to accomplish what “they want”.  They are so focused on their own desires, attachments, and ego that it’s difficult to let go and yield to others.  I notice this all the time during work, where employees compete for the CEO’s attention, and where they are willing to claw at each other for the sake of climbing the corporate ladder.

I also notice that ever since I started to memorize and recite the Buddhist precepts, that subconsciously I become reminded when I encounter certain situations.  I.e., if I come across a person that I feel that I feel is rude and I do not like, the phrase from the precept, “Be compassionate to all beings and treat them as your guests” becomes triggered into my mind and I then observe that precept instead of reciprocating rudeness.  Memorizing the precepts and reciting them with our heart are really good pills of medicine for our heart.  It’s really a great way to break bad habits and to develop good habits in place of them.

Compassion, this is one area which has always been hit or miss for me.  I’ve always wanted to help other people if it was within my abilities.  The challenge in the past was that I always ended up getting screwed over or taken advantage of.  Over the years because of so many bad experiences, I’ve built up a huge wall to shield me from being taken advantage of.  It was only until last year that I started to break this wall down and started to become more compassionate and understanding towards everyone.  It’s still pretty difficult but I’m finding myself still calculating and analyzing whether or not I should help this person, and whether or not this person has malicious intent.  But it’s definitely better, and I’m more open now to helping people for even the littlest things, where in the past I would only do it in exchange for something of material.  I think as long as the person that I am helping is not evil or has malice, then I’m okay with it.  By the way, compassion has always been a really good offset for battling against anger and hate, since most of the time I notice the anger and hate stems from our own ego.

With the increased wisdom that Holy Master imparted to us, it was the catalyst for me to have a deeper appreciation for the above mentioned.  I’m able to calculate and analyze problems, scenarios, situations much quicker and with better judgment.  It feels extremely effortless for me to anticipate problem solving much further in advance, to the point where my wife thinks I’m psychic which I am not.  I try to explain to her that it’s like I’m playing chess and instead of anticipating 1-2 moves ahead, I can play out 5-7 moves in my head in advance.  My emotional intelligence has increased as well as the level of my own self-awareness, further creating additional mental stability with not being swayed or influenced by other people who will pressure others into making bad decisions.  This has been especially handy when encountering other Rinpoches who have attempted to educate me on Buddhism, or curiously reading endlessly about Buddhism on the internet only to find that there is a lot of inaccurate information being posted on the web.

Cosmic Halo – Love and Compassion

“It is the love bestowed by Mahavairocana Buddha.” The words of Holy Master Ziguang Shang Shi were just like a light beam, shining on my heart. Tears filled my eyes, as I felt the blessing and protection given by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

During the observance of the Holy Birthday of Shakyamuni Buddha a magnificent and colorful cosmic halo appeared over the Western Shrine. The tremendous halo was radiating incredible energy and covering the whole shrine.

Witnessing this incomparably glorious image, all students and disciples were filled with joy. Some new comers asked with curiosity, why this unbelievable phenomenon would appear? The Honorable Master answered, it was because the Western Shrine is the holy land for the assembly of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Therefore when it comes time for celebration and ceremony, blessing will be bestowed by compassionate Buddhas.

Then I remembered the first time I saw the cosmic halo was during the birthday of Shakyamuni Buddha five years ago. Since then, I have seen this wonderful sight many times, when the Five World Buddhas Sanctuaries were under construction, when we were practicing supreme Inner Fire Dharma, and when celebrating the birthday of Mahavairocana Buddha. I believed it was made by the inexhaustible holy blessing of Mahavairocana Buddha. Due to the incomparable causes and conditions within, Guang Huan Mi Zong was born from the cosmic halo, for the people and for the world.

The compassion and love of Buddha exists everywhere in the universe. Crossing all the boundaries of ethnic, language, country, time and space, this great love of Buddha has no limitation. Trying to understand it just through human vision would never be enough. Only through the heart could someone answer the calls from the deepest part of his soul.  Holy Master Ziguang Shang Shi manifests this unparalleled compassion and love to all beings in the Saha World through through his action – teaching the Dharma, which offers practitioners the precious chance to obtain health and wisdom.

A Great Breakthrough in Neuroscience

April 6, 2013

Dear President Obama,

We are a non-profit organization dedicated to cause of holistic health for humanity. We would like to introduce a method that can facilitate and even provide breakthroughs in the development and research of the Brain Initiative introduced by you, Mr. President, so that millions of lives can be benefited, and enormous amount of money can saved.

In order to bring peace and health to the world, our founder Holy Master Ziguang Shang Shi has created the methodology named Guang Huan Mi Zong Health Dharma. Despite its religious background, the Holy Master has combined both ancient and modern science and distilled the essence of theories and philosophies to incorporate them in the meditative practice that has changed thousands of people’s lives.

During Holy Master’s over 30 years’ experience of teaching the practice in the East and the West, Guang Huan Mi Zong Health Dharma has been proved to be an easy-to-learn way to provide exceptionally powerful healng effects to its practitioners in a short period of time. A lot of people have testified in person that this practice can not only relieve their physical diseases such as diabetes, asthma, insomnia, arthritis and obesity, but also effectively ease mental disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, bipolar, anxiety, depression and so on.

There are two extraordinary real cases that we would like to share. In a three-day Health Dharma class hold by Holy Master Ziguang Shang Shi in San Francisco, an 89-year old man, who had some speech impairments due to some brain damage following a surgery, came with his daughter. He learned the meditation practice and started talking a bit more coherently and was able to read a Chinese letter, his daughter wrote in her thank-you letter: “we thought he couldn’t do that anymore for the past 3 years.”

A young college student suffered a traumatic brain injury after being stuck by a snow plow resulting in chronic headaches and memory loss, forcing to withdraw from her master’s degree study. Through the practiced of the Health Dharma, she was able to recover and even greatly improve her memory and learning ability. After she resumed her study, she completed a two-year’s urban planning course and attained her master’s degree in Cleveland University within less than one year.

Nowadays, brain studies have become critical to every country. By adopting Guang Huan Mi Zong Health Dharma, which can serve as a shortcut to the research and studies of brain, a government can save vast amount of investment injected to find the way to prevent and cure mental diseases, and make new breakthroughs in this field. We look forward to that Mr. President can take this into consideration and act correspondingly.

Sincerely,

World Peace and Health Organization
